I probably won't spend the entire summer reading books - I love magazines too - but I wanted to share two books that I thought were worth mentioning.

SOMEONE WILL BE WITH YOU SHORTLY by Lisa Kogan

My new found love for vintage sparkly jewelry and my Etsy store opened in August, 2010. I searched for items to sell in my shop, keeping a few favorites for myself. I found a gorgeous bracelet with pearls and Aurora Borealis rhinestones. I may never wear this bracelet, but I enjoy owning this treasure. Then I discovered vintage purses! Whiting & Davis purses are my favorite. Here is a W&D purse that sold this year in my shop. It's gorgeous!

Photographing jewelry is tricky. My goal is to update the photos in my shop. Now that the weather is nice, I'm going to shoot some photos outdoors to see if that lessens the glare. Ancient Egyptian Timeline 5550 BC - 30BC Timeline Jewelry designs and fashion included scarab beetles, scrolls, fleurettes, winged birds, jackals, antelopes, tigers etc. Jewelry types included amulets, necklaces, pendants, bracelets, rings, head jewelry, anklets, diadems, pectorals and insignia. Gemstones used included Turquoise, Carnelian, Chalcedony, Feldspar, Amethyst and Lapis lazuli.

Ancient Mesopotamian Timeline 2750 BC - 1200 BC Timeline From the first Sumerian dynasty of Ur to the Assyrian period. Jewelry designs included leaves, grapes, cones and spirals. Gemstones used included agate, lapis, jasper and carnelian.

Ancient Chinese Timeline 2200-300 BC Timeline Gemstones used included Jade and Diamonds. Jade carving became a sophisticated art during the Shang dynasty (1600–1050 B.C.). Jewelry designs and fashion included scrolls, flowers, turtles, winged birds, dragons and the phoenix. Jewelry types included headdresses, necklaces, pectorals, temple and coin pendants, bracelets, rings, seal rings, head jewelry, anklets and diadems.

Ancient Greek Timeline 1400 BC - 31 BC Timeline From the early Early Mycenaean Age to the Hellenistic period. Jewellery designs and fashion included animals and shells. Jewelry types included necklaces, pendants, bracelets, rings and head jewellery. Gemstones used included amethyst, pearls, chalcedony, cornelian, garnet and emeralds.

Ancient Roman Timeline 500 BC to 400 AD Jewelry designs and fashion included seal rings, amulets and talismans. Designs favored included coiling snakes and animal heads. Jewelry types included brooches, rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. The fibula, a clothes fastener, the cameo and hoop earrings were introduced. Gemstones used included sapphires, emeralds, garnets, jet, topaz, pearls, amber and diamonds.

Medieval Jewelry of the Middle Ages Timeline 1066 - 1485 Sumptuary laws fiercely regulated who could wear jewelry to ensure that the upper class structure was maintained. Trade with East following the Crusades opened via Italy. Jewelry designs and fashion included religious jewelry and jewelry was used to decorate both hair and clothing. Jewelry types included, necklaces, pendants, clasps, bracelets, rings and head jewelry. Gemstones used included precious stones diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires and pearls and semi-precious gemstones.

Georgian Timeline 1760-1830 Jewelry designs focussed on the opulent, elaborate and intricate including multi-strand necklaces and 'chandelier' style earrings. Jewelry fashion included jewelry added to the chatelaine and stomacher. Gemstones used included all the precious stones diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires and semi-precious stones and pearls.

Victorian Timeline 1835-1900 Romantic and natural Jewellry designs and fashion included hearts, stars, crescents, birds and insects. Jewelry types included lockets, brooches, rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Gemstones used included all the precious stones diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires and pearls and semi-precious stones including turquoise, coral, garnets, amethysts onyx, amber, coral, opals, peridots, and jet.

Art Nouveau Timeline 1890-1910 Jewelry designs and fashion encompassed romantic and imaginary curving, slender long limbed lines of the era in winged bird and flower forms. Styles were believed to have been intended to evoke mystical symbols and magical powers including dragons and fairies. Gemstones used included all of the semi precious stones.

Edwardian Timeline 1895-1915 Jewelry designs and fashion were frivolous and fun and continued to be influenced by Art Nouveau designs also including serpents and stars. Jewelry types included dog collar necklaces, bar brooches, pearl sautoirs and bangle or chain bracelets. Gemstones used included amethysts, emeralds, opals, pearls, peridots, rubies, and sapphires.

Art Deco Timeline 1920-1935 The bold and daring Jazz age! The Roaring Twenties! Jewelry designs and fashion included vibrant colors and geometrical shapes influenced by Cubism, Modernism, abstract designs and oriental art. Jewelry types included the popularisation of the the wristwatch. Gemstones used included diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires and pearls and semi-precious stones including turquoise, jade, coral, garnets, amethysts onyx, amber, coral, opals and peridots.

Retro Timeline 1939-1949 Designs and fashion were influenced by the onset of WW2 and shortages of precious metals and gemstones due to embargoes. Jewelry types included patriotic motifs. More semi precious and synthetic gemstones were used.
